Afterwards, I cry, and they hold me. Nobody speaks, and they hold me. But the silence and the warmth are a bridge across ten years, and a bond of healing. Here in our strange little cocoon of peace and eroticism, we rest and find peace.
Eventually though, someone has to be the first…“So what happens now?” I ask, struggling into my knickers. I may be only just emerging from a postcoital haze of rosy emotion, but I’m a realist. Encounters like these are the stuff of fantasy and far too intense to occur on any regular basis. It was a beautiful one-off to be cherished and treasured in the years ahead, and trotted out in my old age to remind me I was once a very daring raver. “Do we reconvene again in ten years time and do it again? I hope they’ve replaced these mats by then…. I’ve just realized that they really do smell awful.”
Drew gives me a rather odd, old-fashioned little smile as he hands me my bra from amongst the jumble of assorted clothes. It’s kind of a sneaky smile, yet benign, full of interesting secrets. He’s half dressed again now, and as I lean forward to let my breasts slip into the cups of my bra, he fastens his shirt, all the time watching me and biting his lip, as if he wants to ask me something.
Steve, at my other side, is already immaculate. Apart from his dark hair, which is a bit wild and he’s attempting to tame by combing it with his fingers.
“I can only smell you, Caitlyn—and you smell gorgeous,” he says, his grin more frisky than Drew’s. “Even after all that, you’re still giving me the horn.”
I’m not sure whether that’s a compliment or not, and as I slip into my skirt and blouse, I sniff myself surreptitiously. Worrying about smelling of sex seems somehow easier than trying to work out what’s going on now. And why Drew looks so smug all of a sudden.
Then we’re all our feet.
Drew holds my arm as I step into my shoes, and then I just stand there like a lemon while the men exchange complicit looks.
“So…that’s it then. Better get back. It’s…um…been interesting.”
I don’t know what to say. What to think. Other than to feel bereft because I don’t want it to end.
Drew raises his eyebrows questioning Steve. Steve shrugs…and smiles…and nods.
“Do you fancy a holiday, Caitlyn?”
Eh?
“Er, I beg your pardon?”
“A holiday? With us,” chimes in Steve, reaching for my hand, just as Drew takes the other one.
“We’ve just scored a major deal for our company, and our reward to ourselves is a fortnight in the Caribbean, in a luxury villa,” Drew says, squeezing my hand. “If you came with us, it would be amazing…and…well, it would give us all a chance to get to know each other again…and…”
“And what?” My mind is racing and reeling. Thinking how crazy this is on one hand, but on the other, thinking, yes, yes, you can do this.
